About cryptocurrency XRP (Ripple)...

Ripple is a open-source cryptocurrency, which is used as a global payment network.

XRP is not a typical cryptocurrency. Transactions are recorded to shared file Ledger, which works similarly as blockchain at classical cryptocurrencies, but veryfing of transactions XRP is not done by mining, but it's based on consensus (all verifiers agree on that transaction took place). 

Benefit of this mechanism are minimal fees and speed, verifying transaction lasts only few seconds (meanwhile Bitcoin transaction lasts several minutes).

Amongst verifiers are also big financial institutes and mother company Ripple Labs. Ripple is beside Bitcoin only partly decentralized currency. Most of the coins XRP (roughly 60%) are still owned by company Ripple Labs.

It is not possible to get Ripple by mining, all the coins has been emited at its startup and the only possible way to get them is by purchase/exchange.

Apple and various national banks have shown interest in using Ripple.
